Logical Domains (LDoms) provides built-in virtualization capabilities for Sun Chip Multithreading (CMT) Servers at no cost. The latest free release of LDoms is version 1.3, which now features CPU dynamic resource management (DRM), domain mobility performances improvement, crypto unit dynamic reconfiguration and migration support, link-based IPMP for virtual network, large virtual disk (>1TB) boot support, and more.
Oracle Offers Companies $10M in Performance Challenge
A new world record TPC-C benchmark result has been set for Oracle Database 11g running on Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 servers with CMT technology, along with Solaris 10 and the new Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array. Oracle reports this world record proves that the Oracle-Sun combination runs faster than IBM DB2 running on IBM’s flagship Power 595. Oracle believes so much in Sun hardware, it is offering companies $10 million if one can prove Oracle Database 11g runs at least twice as fast on IBM’s fastest computer.
String searching or pattern matching are important to a variety of commercial, government and HPC applications. One of the core functions needed for text identification algorithms in data repositories is real-time string searching. A recent Aho-Corasick algorithm for string searching was used for benchmark testing the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220, T5240 and T5440. See the results along with ones from IBM and HP.
A Sun-sponsored IT director’s guide asserts consolidating systems onto the latest server technology and utilizing virtualization techniques will give enterprises increased efficiency, performance and flexibility while lowering costs. In twelve pages, this guide entitled “Reducing Costs by Improving Server Performance” offers what it states is proof that consolidation works. and focuses on Sun servers with CoolThreads technology and Sun SPARC Enterprise M-Series servers as solutions that can bring these claims to reality.
White Paper Presents Virtualizing with Sun CMT Solutions
This new white paper addresses issues many datacenters are currently facing - how to lower TCO while supporting more customers and reducing time to market for new services. This Sun white paper describes some Sun solutions and their technologies, including Sun Blade T6340 and T6320 Server Modules, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440, T5240, T5140, T5220, and T5120 Servers, Sun Logical Domains, and Solaris Containers, to demonstrate the business benefits of consolidating enterprise applications onto Sun CMT rackmount and blade servers.

On Industry-standard E-mail Serving and Java Benchmarks
Sun SPARC Enterprise servers with chip multi-threading (CMT) technology set three new world records on industry-standard e-mail serving and Java benchmarks, Sun reports. These include SPECjbb2005, an industry-standard benchmark that emulates the design of real-world server-side Java applications, and SPECmail2009 that is designed to simulate real-world corporate e-mail environments. Additionally, outstanding performance on the Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition test and Zeus Extensible Traffic Manager were demonstrated.
Record-breaking performance of the chip multi-threaded Sun SPARC Enterprise systems with newly released 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors have many bloggers examining the reported results and dissecting the numbers. The new processors were tested in the Sun CMT family of systems, including the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120, T5220, T5240, T5440 servers and the Sun Blade T6320 server module. Testings considered include SPECint_rate2006, SPECfp_rate2006, SPECjbb2005, SPECjAppServer2004, SAP Standard Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark, Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (BI EE) and Zeus ZXTM HTTPThroughput.
