Logical Domains (LDoms) provides built-in virtualization capabilities for Sun Chip Multithreading (CMT) Servers at no cost. The latest free release of LDoms is version 1.3, which now features CPU dynamic resource management (DRM), domain mobility performances improvement, crypto unit dynamic reconfiguration and migration support, link-based IPMP for virtual network, large virtual disk (>1TB) boot support, and more.
Games to Rely on Wide Array of Hardware, Software, Consulting Services from Sun
Sun Microsystems of Canada will be responsible for managing the IT infrastructure supporting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) in Vancouver, Canada. The assignment entails connecting 15 networked venues and three datacenters, running multiple business applications and an integration test lab, and keeping 10,000 media outlets up to date with over 100 TB of data. This technology infrastructure will handle daily operations as well as share real-time data with billions worldwide.
The Sun Partner Advantage Program for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) has some new development hardware offerings that include Sun Ultra 27 Assemble to Order (ATO); Sun Fire X2270, X4170 X4270, and X4275 Servers ATO; standard configurations for the Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000, T5120, T5140, T5220, and T5240 Servers; among others. As part of this program, qualified Sun partners are able to purchase products, such as these, at discounted rates.
String searching or pattern matching are important to a variety of commercial, government and HPC applications. One of the core functions needed for text identification algorithms in data repositories is real-time string searching. A recent Aho-Corasick algorithm for string searching was used for benchmark testing the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220, T5240 and T5440. See the results along with ones from IBM and HP.
As reported on earlier, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 server running OpenSolaris 2009.06 source code and the Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) software (version 1.6.0_14 Performance Release), posted a single-chip world record on the SPECjbb2005. An entry on the BestPerf blog takes a closer look at these results and points out the significance of this single chip world record, which resulted in 231464 SPECjbb2005 bops and 28933 SPECjbb2005 bops/JVM.
White Paper Presents Virtualizing with Sun CMT Solutions
This new white paper addresses issues many datacenters are currently facing - how to lower TCO while supporting more customers and reducing time to market for new services. This Sun white paper describes some Sun solutions and their technologies, including Sun Blade T6340 and T6320 Server Modules, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440, T5240, T5140, T5220, and T5120 Servers, Sun Logical Domains, and Solaris Containers, to demonstrate the business benefits of consolidating enterprise applications onto Sun CMT rackmount and blade servers.
Includes 1.6 GHz Processors, 800 MHz 4 GB DIMMs, Pre-installed LDoms 1.2 and ILOM 3.0
A number of new configurations and options are being offered for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120, T5220, T5240, T5440 servers and the Sun Blade T6320 server module based on the Chip Multithreading technology (CMT) UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors. These include 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors, 800 MHz 4 GB DIMMs, pre-installed Logical Domains (LDoms) 1.2, Solaris 10 05/09 (Update 7), Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) 3.0, and more. Pricing for some of these new offerings also are being made available at special rates.
On Industry-standard E-mail Serving and Java Benchmarks
Sun SPARC Enterprise servers with chip multi-threading (CMT) technology set three new world records on industry-standard e-mail serving and Java benchmarks, Sun reports. These include SPECjbb2005, an industry-standard benchmark that emulates the design of real-world server-side Java applications, and SPECmail2009 that is designed to simulate real-world corporate e-mail environments. Additionally, outstanding performance on the Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition test and Zeus Extensible Traffic Manager were demonstrated.
The Sun white paper “Maximize IT Uptime by Utilizing Dependable Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 Servers” explains why deploying those servers can help support organizational efforts to achieve high IT service uptime goals. The authors contend the features of these servers, identified as a low component count, extensive data integrity features and superior energy efficiency, promote reliability. In addition, redundant components foster high levels of availability, and Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) and self-healing features simplify serviceability.
Record-breaking performance of the chip multi-threaded Sun SPARC Enterprise systems with newly released 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 and T2 Plus processors have many bloggers examining the reported results and dissecting the numbers. The new processors were tested in the Sun CMT family of systems, including the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120, T5220, T5240, T5440 servers and the Sun Blade T6320 server module. Testings considered include SPECint_rate2006, SPECfp_rate2006, SPECjbb2005, SPECjAppServer2004, SAP Standard Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark, Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (BI EE) and Zeus ZXTM HTTPThroughput.
