Executives Review Oracle-Sun Product Strategies
Oracle is hiring 2,000 salespeople and engineers to sell not just software but hardware, now that Oracle’s acquisition of Sun, which was completed on Jan. 27, transforms it from a software company to a systems company. In a five-hour event, Oracle executives assured the IT industry it will accelerate the investment in Sun’s SPARC/Solaris server and storage hardware.
Oracle Launches Exadata Partner Program
Oracle OpenWorld 2009 brought Sun executives and technologies to the center stage during the five-day event held in San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Sun co-founder Scott McNealy made the final keynote on day one of the conference to a packed Hall D Moscone North. He reflected on the top 10 innovations from Sun, and the technologies that will get even more funding from Oracle following the acquisition. Following McNealy on stage, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said combining Oracle and Sun’s technology would let Oracle “do things neither company would be able to do by themselves.”
First Database Machine for OLTP 
Sun and Oracle introduced the first database machine for online transaction processing (OLTP) called the Sun Oracle Database Machine or Oracle Exadata Version 2. It is based on Sun hardware, including FlashFire technology, along with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 and Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software Release 11.2. Designed to significantly speed up OLTP, data warehousing, and mixed database workloads, the companies claim this latest version is twice as fast as Version 1 for data warehousing.

Slated for June 1-3, 2009, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, the third annual developer conference is free the first day that promises an opening day keynote from John Fowler, executive vice president of Systems, and Dave Douglas, senior vice president of Cloud Computing and Chief Sustainability Officer, Sun Microsystems.
To Debut in Mid-range Servers, Fowler Says
As Sun has been saying for over a year now, its 16-core Rock server chip is expected to hit the marketplace in the second half of 2009 with delivery coming sometime this fall. John Fowler, executive vice president of systems at Sun, said in an interview with IDG’s Agam Shah, “The processor is in various stages of debug. We’re getting close [to release].”
