Now the World’s Largest Purveyor of Open Source Software

With its acquisition of Sun, Oracle is now the world’s largest purveyor of open source software. However, as Ken Hess notes on the DaniWeb Forum Index, Oracle’s support didn’t start with its purchase of InnoDB, MySQL or Sun. The company has a history of supporting free and open source software and has done much for the FOSS community.

Sun Assists in Building Verizon Developer Community (VDC)

Collaborating on Application Store, Support of Mobile Developer Program

Sun is working closely with Verizon Wireless to help foster the recently launched Verizon Developer Community (VDC). Sun is providing key technologies and services to support VDC and help build the V CAST Apps storefront, scheduled to launch later this year. Developers who have created apps for platforms such as Java, BREW, Android, Windows Mobile and others are welcome to join the VDC and submit concepts and applications for V CAST Apps.

InfoWorld’s 2009 Best of Open Source Software Awards (Bossies)

MySQL, Java, NetBeans, VirtualBox, and OpenOffice.org Recognized

NetBeans 6.7 and VirtualBox were named as two of the 40 named best open source softwares in InfoWorld’s 2009 Bossies. This year a new Hall of Fame list was compiled to name the top picks for the most indispensable open source software of all time and MySQL landed in the top 10 of “the most important and valuable” open source software. Also in the Hall of Fame, Sun and its Java programming language received a salute along with JIT compiler for becoming a part of the open source community.
