Now the World’s Largest Purveyor of Open Source Software
With its acquisition of Sun, Oracle is now the world’s largest purveyor of open source software. However, as Ken Hess notes on the DaniWeb Forum Index, Oracle’s support didn’t start with its purchase of InnoDB, MySQL or Sun. The company has a history of supporting free and open source software and has done much for the FOSS community.

Business Growth Demands Supported Technically, Economically, Conveniently
Virgin Mobile France launched in 2006. Its business involves purchasing, repackaging, and selling wireless services. Leveraging the Orange infrastructure, Virgin Mobile France relied on a LAMP platform (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl/Python) to drive its business. Even though the MySQL Community Edition performed well, Virgin Mobile France began to consider its options when its number of subscribers approached 1 million.

White House, DoD Demonstrate Support for Open Source Software
The Office of the Secretary of Defense CIO recently released policy guidance promoting the use of open source software throughout the U.S. Department of Defense. The DoD is not the only area where the federal government is embracing open source, so is the White House whose Web site now runs on open source technologies. “By choosing open source software as the defining technology of Whitehouse.gov, it is clear that the President means business,” said Bill Vass, president and COO of Sun Microsystems Federal.

On Amazon EC2’s Cloud Computing Service
There is a new release of hardened OpenSolaris 2008.11 AMI on Amazon EC2’s cloud computing service. It contains Drupal AMI with AMP stack. Installed and pre-configured on this publicly available AMI are Drupal v6.10, Apache v2.2, MySQL v5.0, and PHP v5.2. In his introduction of this release, Sun Distinguished Engineer and Chief Security Architect Glenn Brunette offers two points: 1) no security-relevant changes were necessary to Drupal; and 2) MySQL was modified to not listen on the network for connections.

Get a Three-node Virtual Hadoop Cluster Using OpenSolaris Zones
Apache Hadoop is a free Java software framework that supports data intensive distributed applications. It enables applications to work with thousands of nodes and petabytes of data. OpenSolaris has a project dedicated to Hadoop with the goal of making it more scalable, robust, deployable and easy to use. Philippe Julio elaborates on the Hadoop architecture, defining its features, tips for proof of concept, configuration and multiple resource links.

How to Make an Educated Decision to Avoid Pitfalls
Today’s budget constraints are sending more and more organizations toward incorporating open-source software. However, managing and supporting a range of disparate software solutions can be a challenge. Sun has scripted a guide on using open-source software for web infrastructure and introduces the Sun GlassFish Portfolio as a viable option. The open web application platform offers organizations what Sun considers the best variety of open source innovations and enterprise-class support. This 14-page white paper addresses choosing the “right” open source platform while looking at different open source offerings, and provides an overview of open-source projects along with recommendations.

Increased Development Cycles up to 50%, Decreased TCO by about 50% for One Telecom
The Netherland’s third largest provider of fixed-telephony services, Pretium Telecom, wanted to simplify its service-oriented architecture (SOA), to speed up the development of a new VoIP offering and to minimize costs. After evaluating possible solutions from Sun, Apache and JBoss, Pretium Telecom and its IT vendor Yenlo concluded that replacing the current SOA Suite with Sun GlassFish Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server could provide the required functionality in a smaller, more agile, open-standards–based framework.
