Case Study Also Shows 108% Increase in Server Efficiency
Anyone looking to boost energy efficiency for SAP environments, while increasing hardware performance and environment expansion should take a look at a case study on BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH. The Germany-based domestic appliance supplier migrated its SAP software onto a platform consisting of Sun SPARC Enterprise servers, Solaris 10, Sun Blade servers and Sun StorageTek systems. This move reduced its annual power consumption by 59% and increased server efficiency by 108%.
Ranks the 500 Largest U.S. Companies 
Newsweek along with environmental researchers KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost, and CorporateRegister.com recently ranked the largest U.S. companies based on their actual environmental performance, policies, and reputation. Sun came in at number 14 in the list of 500 in Newsweek’s inaugural green rankings for 2009.

Proof-of-concept Environment Describes Full Free Air Cooling Technique 
Sun and Belgacom engineers collaborated on a proof-of-concept environment to show how to effectively and efficiently cool carrier-grade servers, namely Sun Netra servers, using only ambient air. Erik Vanden Meersch and Ravi Sanjeev with Sun, along with Johan Vanderhaegen of Belgacom, reveal their discoveries in a Sun BluePrints Online article “Conserving Energy and Increasing ROI with Sun Netra Servers and Full Free Air Cooling.”

Virtual BackOffice is a virtual IT infrastructure that is highly scalable and available. Created by Merkl IT, this solution gives customers access to their data and applications from almost any location with very little hardware required onsite. When Merkl IT began working on what has now become its core product a few years ago, the company knew that it needed hardware that would help provide high resiliency, scalability and fast response times for its customers. Although it considered other products, the company decided to rely on several Sun products for its solution.
Also Gains Efficiency, Speed, Networking Support 
By working with Sun Startup Essentials program, MusicMetric of London paid 50% less than it originally estimated for the cost of hardware and cut server power-consumption 60% by choosing Sun over Dell. Networking is another benefit MusicMetric has reaped with the Sun Startup Essentials program. “We try to go to as many Sun events as we can,” commented MusicMetric’s Greg Mead. “It’s a really good way to meet other people dealing with similar challenges and Stewart Townsend, a Startup Essentials Manager, has introduced us to some great business leads.”

Sun and Emerson Electric Co., an electrical products manufacturer, announced they will partner to offer businesses technology that improve energy efficiency in data centers. This global sales alliance will have Sun’s data center efficiency consultants working directly with Emerson’s local Liebert power, cooling and services specialists worldwide to assess, develop and maintain solutions for a variety of customer data center problems. The companies promise to deliver plans along with products and services for improved data center productivity and efficiency.
