Automatic Data Migration (ADM) with ZFS

20253: Automatic Data Migration (ADM) with ZFS

OpenSolaris HSM for Solaris file systems, including ZFS

ADM, Automatic Data Migration, is an OpenSolaris HSM (hierarchical Storage Management) system for Solaris file systems. With ADM, files can be moved to archive storage (disk or tape) to free up space on primary devices.  ADM will recalled data from the archive storage when needed. The process of capturing, releases and recalling data to/from archive storage is based on policies set by the administrator based on file characteristics. ADM is being built initially for ZFS to provide many of the functional characteristics of SAM-QFS.

Proposed ADM 1.0 Features

  • ZFS support via DMAPI
  • Policy Management of files. including classification
  • Data protection (archiving) of as many copies of a file as needed
  • ZFS-level scalability
  • Disk archiving - support STK tape an library support via the Media Management Systems (MMS) - IEEE standard 1244
  • Simplified administration model (CUI and WUI)
