Sun Expands its x64 Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processors Server Line
Sun is expanding its line in the x64 server space with the introduction of the Sun Fire X4140, Sun Fire X4240 and Sun Fire X4440 servers all of which are powered by Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors and offer a choice of operating systems, including the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris OS), OpenSolaris operating system, Linux, Windows and VMware.
- The Sun Fire X4140 server, powered by the AMD Opteron processor 2200 and 2300 series, is a two-socket, 8-core, 1RU system with prices starting at US$2,545.
- The Sun Fire X4240, powered by the AMD Opteron 2200 and 2300 processor series, is a two-socket, 8-core, 2RU system that start at $3,145.
- The Sun Fire X4440 server is powered by either dual or quad-core AMD Opteron 8000 processor series in a 2U chassis. Prices start at $7,845.
Additional systems announced with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors include the Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4200 M2, Sun Fire X4600 M2 and Sun Blade X8440 servers.
The Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4140, Sun Fire X4200 M2, Sun Fire X4240 and Sun Fire X4440 servers are available now. The Sun Fire X4600 M2 and Sun Blade X8440 servers are expected to be available by the end of the quarter.
